Safety basics

  • Know who you’re dealing with — be cautious with people you’ve only met online.
  • Never send money (or gift cards / crypto) to someone you haven’t met in person.
  • Be extra cautious if the person claims to be overseas or “travelling for work”.
  • Avoid wire transfers or payment methods that are hard to reverse.
  • Protect intimate content — scammers can use it for blackmail.

Common scam patterns

  • They move very fast (love-bombing) and push you off-platform immediately.
  • They have a dramatic emergency (hospital, travel, customs fees, military deployment) and ask for money.
  • They ask you to buy gift cards, send crypto, or use a money transfer service.
  • They refuse video calls or always have excuses not to meet.
  • They ask for your personal details (IDs, passwords, banking info) or want “verification payments”.

If you think you’ve been scammed

  • Stop communicating and block the person anywhere you can.
  • Report the profile to Memeistry so we can investigate and protect other users.
  • If you sent money or shared financial details, contact your bank / payment provider immediately.
  • Report the scam via Scamwatch (ACCC) to help track trends.
  • If you’ve lost money or are being threatened/blackmailed, contact police (Australia: ACORN / cybercrime reporting).
